Henri Julien Félix Rousseau (1844
– 1910) the French Post-Impressionist painter in the Naïve or Primitive style
was also known as Le Douanier (the
customs officer) because of his job before he retired at the age of 49 and took
to painting full time. Whilst employed
by the Government he collected taxes on goods entering Paris.
