A feasibility study has recently concluded that sniffer dogs can be
trained to detect illegal timber regardless of whether it is still in its raw
state or part of a finished product.
The EU study trained springer spaniels to indicate timber that was in
contravention of CITES or local legislation and found that they had a 90%
success rate! The study is now going to
be moved to ports and airports to assess the success rate in the field. More power to their noses!
